Mike Smith: 5th Dan in Aikido from Dojin Aikikai; 4th Dan in Shorin Ryu Karate from International Karate League (IKL); 2nd Dan in Iaido. Sensei Smith began his martial arts career in 1971 with Statewide Karate League (now International Karate League, IKL) in Riverside. He took up aikido in 1978 with classes at March Air Force Base in Moreno Valley under Shihan Ron Granville, the founder of the Dojin Aikikai organization. In 1987, Sensei Smith opened his own dojo teaching both aikido and karate.
Sensei Smith is retired after a 27 year career with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Although no longer an on-duty Sheriff’s Deputy, he still teaches prospective peace offices for various agencies at the Peace Officer Basic Academy as he has since 1980, first at Riverside Community College and currently at College of the Desert in Palm Desert. He has recently also begun teaching a Defensive Tactics class at San Joaquin Valley College in Rancho Cucamonga. The control techniques he teaches are all aikido-based.
